Chicken First Aid and Health

Want to develop a quarterly chicken health maintenance program for your flock? Wishing you had first aid resources at home so that every concern doesn’t involve an expensive trip to the avian vet? Come spend the afternoon with Laura Menard in Four Acorns Farm’s new, rare breed Chicken Barn and learn about… 

  • Most common chicken diseases and illnesses

  • How to protect against mites and anemia

  • How to avoid hypocalcemia in your flock

  • How to establish and maintain a quarterly flock health routine

  • How to maintain a well stocked first aid kit

  • How to proactively gather resources to care for your flock

You will receive a well stocked chicken first aid kit and leave with a better understanding of how to care for your birds in an emergency as well as a helpful handout.

Registration is through Cabrillo College Extension. No walk ins.

Please be sure to wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and dress for the weather. You will be standing and moving around the farm for most of the class time, and walking on unpaved paths.

Intermediate Basketry - Medium Tote Basket

Basketry is the art and craft of making interwoven objects, usually containers, from flexible fibers. It is both one of mankind's oldest art forms and tools. Come join our creative community as we venture into basketry in Four Acorns Farm's 1880's barn class and event space next to the new, rare breed Chicken Barn. In this class, artist/instructor Laura Menard will guide you through the construction of a intermediate-level medium tote basket. This is a rectangular, handled basket with an open weave base. The class will cover which tools to use, how to work with reed, and how to start, shape, and finish your basket.  Resources and basket inspiration will also be shared.

Class fee is $120. Your $40 materials fee will be paid in class and covers all the reed necessary to finish this project, and the required tool kit, prepared by your instructor. 

Registration is online through Cabrillo College Extension. No drop ins.

No experience required! Please be sure to wear comfortable clothing that can get messy. Please bring your own lunch as we’ll pause for a mid day break.

Beginning Basketry - Sunday Bread Basket

Basketry is the art and craft of making interwoven objects, usually containers, from flexible fibers. It is both one of mankind's oldest art forms and tools. Come join our creative community as we venture into basketry in Four Acorns Farm's 1880's barn class and event space next to the new, rare breed Chicken Barn. In this class, artist/instructor Laura Menard will guide you through the construction of a beginner level Sunday Bread Basket. This open basket has a slotted base and woven sides. The class will cover which tools to use, how to work with reed, and how to start with a slotted/racetrack base, shape, and finish your basket. Resources and basket inspiration will also be shared. 

Class fee: $120. Your materials fee of $40 will be paid in class: $25 covers all the reed necessary to finish your project, and the required tool kit will be available to purchase in class for $15. For those students who took the Beginning Basket Weaving class, you will not need to purchase the tool kit as long as you bring all of the tools that were provided during that class!

Come join our creative community as we venture into basketry in Four Acorns Farm's 1880's barn class and event space next to the new, rare breed Chicken Barn.   In this four hour class, artist/instructor Laura Menard will guide you through the construction of a beginner-level Shaker Cheese Basket. This is an open woven, flat reed round basket. The class will cover which tools to use, how to work with reed, and how to start, shape, and finish your basket. Resources and basket inspiration will also be shared. 

Class is $120. Your materials fee of $40 will be paid in class: $25 covers all the reed necessary to finish your project, and the required tool kit will be available to purchase in class for $15.
