Four Acorns Farm’s Poultry Barn

~ Before ~

Here’s the old poultry palace I purchased in Aptos…

This property was a poultry farm many moons ago with a long chicken barn on site. The sandy hillside slowly slid down and began to push the barn over. The damp soil brought termites and rot throughout the walls, roof, and support beams. The structure served as a potting shed for the last several decades until it was abandoned. Then the rodents moved in. It was scary in there and not a bit “old farm” picturesque!

… and the Poultry Barn now

Viewed from the hillside above, the new 2,000 square foot poultry barn is nestled amongst redwoods, crab apple, and olive trees. The classic style of the corrugated tin roof was designed to echo the main barn in the distance.

The front of the Poultry Barn features 4 reclaimed french doors set as awning swing windows framed by corbels and tin awnings. A new arbor supports an old wisteria tree flanked by olive trees.

Entrance to the nursery is sheltered by another custom awning with another awning over the rear window near the first run. Always room for potted plants and ceramic chickens!

Board and batten exterior in fire resistant Hardie board siding protects the Nursery (left). A long retaining wall now holds the hillside and makes room for the six extended chicken runs.

Close up details: goose neck barn light, corbels, galvanized tin rolling barn door, and reclaimed french door with true divided lights repurposed as an awing swing window. So much attention to detail!

The front of the Poultry Barn is now graced by a gorgeous Sonoma rock wall - delineating the space between the Poultry Barn and the 1850’s barn. Future planting and a path from the barn steps under the arbor to the drive way are in the works.
