Marans - French feather legged Splash
Marans chickens are synonymous with chocolate brown eggs. The breed originated in the French village of the same name. Marans, with the “s'“, indicates both singular and plural. The breed comes in a wide variety of colors, including the most common: black copper. Variations include clean legs (usually of American breeding) and feather legged, considered the desirable French standard. Our birds are french feather legged Marans in the splash coloration. We have Greenfire Farms, Cedar Hills, and Overstreet lines.
Fun fact: Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels, made Marans eggs Agent 007’s favorite, sealing the egg’s elite status with the British.
The temperament of a Marans is curious, bright, and hardy. The are excellent foragers but also thrive in a coop setting.
Marans mature between 22-24 weeks of age and will lay about 200 dark chocolate brown eggs/year.
Splash chicks hatch a pale grey, and like the dog breed, Dalamatian, their spots come in as they mature. And like their spotted canine friends, no two uniquely splashed Marans look alike.
