The Bielefelder (or Bielefelder Kennhuhn) is a German breed of domestic chicken. It was developed in the area of Bielefeld, Germany, in the 1970s by Gerd Roth. Roth cross-bred birds of Malines and Welsumer stock with American Barred Rocks to create the breed. Like other breeds with Barred Rock parentage, it is auto-sexing – chicks of different sexes can be distinguished by their color at hatch.

The Bielefelder is a large, dual purpose chicken - great for both meat and eggs. They have single combs, yellow clean legs, and striking crele feathering – a cuckoo pattern with black-breasted red coloring. These are gentle, docile, and substantial birds with the barred roosters weighing close to 12 pounds. Hens are just shy of 10 pounds. Heritage breed. GreenFire Farms stock.

At 22 weeks of maturity, you can expect about 230-280 large brown eggs/year. These eggs will often have a pink or blush undertone. I have a rare mutation in my flock - spotted or freckled eggs. These are simply beautiful and I am consciously breeding to create a flock of hens who only lay a spotted egg. See photos for both types of eggs.

Bielefelder chicks have the common “chipmunk” pattern at hatch. Male chicks have blondish shades with a yellow/light dot on their heads. Female chicks have more distinct reddish stripes, eye liner, and no dot on their heads.
